The importance of mobility...
Mobility, yoga and Pilates classes in Derby. Here to save you from 'putting socks on pain!!'
When I first came to the world of yoga I understood the importance of stretching to reduce tension, tightness & fatigued muscles. Increasing blood flow to the muscles is never a bad thing right? Well there are different ways of stretching, all fantastic (of course!!) but actually the more training & understanding I get of the body & movement the more I think... I just don't want to be old & not be able to put my socks on without pulling something.

We all put our socks on like that don't we?
Ability to move freely
Moving freely through your joints in full range. Wow, that's a dream. So, why do we loose that ability of chucking our foot in the air & putting our socks on in such a fancy way?!
Well the reality, as we age our mobility decreases. As it decreases our body has to find other ways of doing the same actions (e.g putting socks on), usually that's some kind of leaning or angling the body in an odd way to get the job done. Which usually is a little uncomfortable. So, in order to not bend the wrong way or put high demand on muscles that don't require that much in certain movements, it's going to be super helpful to maintain a good level of mobility in the body. This means exercises for shoulders & hips, these have the most range in the body so it's ideal to keep good range as we get a little older. (I'll stop talking about getting old now).
The spine is high importance to most day to day activities, the spine moves with your arm to reach up for an item off the top shelf. Spinal movements will give you an idea of where your tight bits are and where your resistance is in the body. If you're like me and hold tension in upper back & shoulders, that might be the culprit to your difficulty in that 'putting on socks' movement. If you foot just refuses to go anywhere near your hands the issue may be lower back or hip range.
Class will help find out where your restrictions in the body are. But you might want a postural assessment which you can book in here.
Improved mental health
The benefits of mobility practice on your mental health are incredible. Reducing stress & improved mood to name a few. When you move the body you release endorphins (the feel good, natural mood boosters). Studies have show that exercise alleviates symptoms such as low self esteem & social withdrawal. Going to a mobility class you receive the teachings and exercises that will improve your body and mind but, it's also a great place to meet like minded people. It's an opportunity to have a chat to others about your back pain or... the fact you can now put your socks on with ease!! Thanks to mobility exercises.
